TOUR CONCEPT: As we travel from the ancient city of Marrakech across the Atlas Mountains to the Sahara, Dianne Fogwell will share her expertise in print and the artist book in a mentoring environment. We will explore a way of seeing and making connections through creative thinking while observing a new landscape and culture with the various materials and methods fundamental to print, paint, drawing and the artist book.
Dianne will explore specialised technical, conceptual skills and knowledge required to plan and develop a body of work. Each student will be encouraged to expand their abilities of observation and appreciation of forms that can be applied to the print matrix and the artist book.
We will explore the travel journal, the importance of materials, appropriate print techniques and book structures specific to the artistic objectives of the students through the joy of responding directly to a new environment.

This tour will give us an opportunity to think about patterns, colour and texture. We will make simple linocuts and stamps, stencil blocks for layers of colours, drawing and watercolour monoprints, found object prints and frottage drawings, as well as many different simple books playing with structural patterns and folding.
A Chinese concertina book will be used as a travel journal for drawing, recording and the collection of ideas. Simple techniques will demonstrate the fundamental basic principles for more complex projects that can be followed up in each persons studio after the tour.

About Dianne Fogwell
Dianne Fogwell is one of the most respected printmakers and artists book practitioners in Australia. She has been a master printer and founding director of print studios such as Studio One, Criterion Fine Art Press and Gallery and Lewis Editions.
Dianne has a long list of national and international solo and group exhibitions. Recent awards include the national 2017 Geelong Print Prize and 2017 Banyule Award for Works on Paper. She was recently the Grand Prix Winner, Ukraine for her artist book “Emu”. Dianne was the invited International Juror for the 7th Bahart Bhavan International Biennial of Print, Bhopal, India and recently for the 2018 New Zealand Print and Painting Award.
She has been an invited artist to international biennials for print and the artist book in Poland, Belgium, Belgrade, France, London and most recently China and Portugal. She has been a selected finalist in major national print and painting awards such as the National Works on Paper, Silk Cut Award, Burnie Print Prize, Swan Hill Print and Painting Prize and the Portia Geach Portrait Prize.
Dianne was a lecturer at the ANU School of Art for from 1981 to 2006, lecturing in the Graphic Investigation workshop 1985 – 1996 and from 1996 to 2006 Lecturer in charge of Edition + Artist Book Studio. Dianne has been curator, co/curator for international and national touring exhibitions for artist books and given workshops and lecturers in Greece, New Zealand, South Korea and Japan.
Dianne is represented in many national and international collections including; National Gallery of Australia; China Printmaking Museum, Guanlan, Shenzhen, China and most Regional Galleries, Public Libraries, Universities, corporate and private collections.

ABOUT the tour
Our journey together will traverses a large part of southern Morocco from the ancient city of Marrakech, over the spectacular landscape of the Atlas Mountains to the northern edge of the vast Sahara.
Traveling with Dianne we will experience the wonderful world of the indigenous Amazigh(Berber) people. Time is given to making art en route as we explore the wealth and beauty of the Moroccan landscape and culture, interspersed with lively discussion on the topics of conceptual image-making, sharing ideas and evening reviews of the work.
Accommodation is provided in the most comfortable traditional guesthouses, and we enjoy the extraordinary delights of the local cuisine and hospitality including traditional music performance. The warmth and good humour of the people is immense and the insights into the Islamic world and Amazigh spirituality and contemporary life fascinating.

including artist /curator Rita Lazauskas and professional Amazigh Guide Abdenabi Imelouane, the program offers an innovative and creative way to explore a new place that is stimulating, supportive and safe.
