about the BIENNALE
“Amidst the rise of global tensions back in 2004, noted philanthropist Vanessa BRANSON envisioned a cultural festival that would address social issues through the arts, using them as a vehicle for debate and discussion, and to build bridges between diverse ideologies…Beginning in 2005 as a gathering of arts enthusiasts who organized literary events and exhibitions, the Biennale has grown to become a thriving, internationally recognized event.” from MB6 The Plan
The Marrakech Biennale is now recognised as being in the Top 20 amongst world Art Biennales and sure to offer a vibrant and relevant insight into contemporary arts practice.
Limited places are available on this exclusive group tour where Rita Lazauskas will share her knowledge and extensive experience of working in Morocco. Rita’s familiarity with the complexities of Marrakech and her local contacts on the ground will help make this journey a memorable one as we immerse in the latest art and the MB6 Curatorial Concept together!
MB6 Curatorial Concept
“The curatorial concept of this year’s biennial starts the premise of the designated title for the Biennale: Not New Now. It aims to provide for an intellectual framework that unites multiple arenas of art and cultures by looking at it from the particular location and history of the city of Marrakech. It builds on a long-standing history of Pan Afro-Arab unity, through critically investigating socio-political projects, cultural partnerships, and art movements that have led to many shared artistic tendencies. The heritage sites of Marrakech will invoke these moments of intersection, through a plethora of site-specific commissions and installations, by a group of international artists especially from Africa, the Arab world and its diasporas.” from MB6 The Plan
100 artists from 30 countries will participate…
AUDIO & VISUAL ARTS: Paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, digital works of art, installations, architecture, video installations, design and artistic expressions.
ART IN PUBLIC PLACES: Art in any media that has been planned and executed with the intention of being staged in the physical domain.
“The Marrakech Biennale offers itself to an expanded turbulent region that is in need of a stable host like Marrakech to lead the charge in the arts. Africa, the Arab world and the Mediterranean are connected to Marrakech by geography, history and cultural commonalities. Marrakech as a city is also magical and challenging; it naturally inspires the arts to push its limits and frontiers. MB6 is fully set to be a major contender in the art world, as it should be.” – Reem FADDA, Curator – from MB6 The Plan
AMAZIGH CULTURAL TOURS MOROCCO
MB6 detailed PROGRAM
The week begins on 23 February with our friendly guide Abdou meeting you at the airport with a car to take you straight to the door of our guesthouse in the old Medina to meet with RITA LAZAUSKAS.
We meet, greet, take a first walk to take in the sights, sounds, smells of Morocco. We settle in together before day 2 brings the Official Biennale Opening event at the spectacular Badii Palace!
Rita will take us to the main venues including the MMP+ Marrakech Museum of Photography & Visual Art, Badii Palace, Bahia Palace, Dar Si Said and a host of other indoor and outdoor venues in the old Medina and Gueliz (new town).
We will visit contemporary art galleries and find all the best places to eat and shop while we will explore the contemporary art this Biennale will gather.
We will also immerse in the history and culture of Morocco and the colourful souks which will surround us and enjoy some discussion and the sharing of ideas as we travel together.
There will be time to relax in between, visit the famous Jardin Majorelle, home of Yves St Laurent and his exquisite collection, or take a day trip to the picturesque Atlas Mountains or coastal port of Essaouira.
The warmth and good humour of the people in Morocco is immense and the insights into the Islamic world, Amazigh spirituality and contemporary life are fascinating.
Accommodation is provided in a most comfortable traditional guesthouse in the old Medina, where we will enjoy the extraordinary delights of local food and hospitality.
Sharing the experience with a small group of like-minded people and an experienced team of co-hosts offers an innovative and creative way to explore Marrakech that is stimulating, supportive and safe.
